Customer Service is Key for your Fitness Business

Ron Clark

To keep your fitness business up and running for 25+ years like ours, you need to have a few things straight. One of those things is realizing you are in a service-based industry. You and your business should be serving people. It should be your main goal. So, needless to say, having great service for your customers is key for your fitness business. I believe it has been one of the keys of the continued success of NFPT.Customer Service

One of the things we here at NFPT pride ourselves on is our superb customer service. We constantly get compliments on our internal staff and the help they give. We have a dedicated staff who cares about our trainers and their careers. I believe that fact alone sets us higher then the rest of the certification companies out there. And I know others would say the same. Here we have one example of a satisfied NFPT affiliate:

“I’d like to say that I am DELIGHTED with NFPT’s Customer Service. Every time I call I get a friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff member that is eager to help me. I highly recommend being certified through NFPT. My experience for the last two and a half years has been excellent.”

You need to show your customers and clients that you actually care. It shouldn’t be about a paycheck for you. It should be about the wellbeing, continued progression and the overall bettering of your clients. And this brings us to my last point in this series. You have to love what you do! Not everyone is meant to be a personal trainer. You need to want to help and serve others. If you are just in this industry for the money, you better pack up and leave because you won’t make it long.

The Top 5 Biggest Personal Training Mistakes

NFPT Team

Every personal trainer has made mistakes. No matter if you are just starting out or if you’ve been a trainer for the past 20 years. You either have or will make a mistake. It is inevitable. The difference between mediocre trainers and successful trainers will come after you make those mistakes. What do you do about them? To become successful, you need to change something when you make a mistake. We’ve compiled five of the biggest mistakes personal trainers make to try and help you avoid these common pitfalls.

Not offering a truly personalized program for clients

Every trainer suffers from this at some point. Everyone trains his or her clients according to their own personal bias. Some may think heavy weights are everything, while another may think that stretching and balance are far superior. You need to make sure you are offering your clients what they need, not just what you’re comfortable with. Every client will be different and so should their workouts.

Not conducting a proper initial fitness assessment

For first-time clients, you NEED to assess them! Without this assessment, they can easily become injured from pushing too hard or trying exercises they simply cannot do right now. Make sure and find a reliable assessment tool and run every one of your clients through it.Bad Personal Trainer

Not taking advantage of continuing education

You want to be a successful trainer, right? Well then do something to better yourself! There are endless opportunities for you to learn something new through continuing education. NFPT alone offers specialty courses and continuing education courses. We also have approved providers who have tons of other courses! What do you want to learn more about? There is most likely a course you can take that is relatively reasonably priced for the knowledge you will walk away with.

Not being fully focused on the client

Not paying attention to a client is a detrimental mistake. You need to be fully focused on the client at hand. Watching carefully for correct form, appropriate breathing and gauging their energy levels. Not only do you look like you don’t care, but it is also not safe for your client. Your clients are paying you for your attention and expertise, not so you can check your cell phone and talk with your friends. Give them the respect they deserve.

Don’t get a big head!

This is a very counter-cultural statement to say in this industry. Yes, you need to know and believe you are a great trainer. You are always on display and need to be at your best when training your clients or when you are just at the gym. Being confident is a good thing. But, there is a difference between being confident and being cocky.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of mistakes to be made. We believe these are some of the biggest ones trainers make. Stay as far way as possible from these five things, and you are on the right path. The path to success! Remember that making mistakes will be unavoidable. It is how you respond to those mistakes that will make you a great personal trainer or keep you a mediocre one.

Becoming the Expert in Your Area

Ron Clark

Becoming the fitness expert in your area is one of the greatest ways to keep your fitness business running for many more years to come. Doing this is no easy task, especially if you are in a bigger city. There is always a ton of competition out there. If you truly want your fitness business to succeed then you need to become the expert.

How do you become an expert in your field? You need to be the one who is releasing new, relevant and valuable content. Today, there are tons of ways people are giving and receiving new information. There are billions of people who are getting information from the Internet from hundreds of thousands of different sites. Whether it is from a news source or various social media channels, people in your area will get the information they desire.

You need to view releasing new content about the fitness industry as important as building up a brand. Once people see the quality of information you give out and how often you give it, they will come back to you time and time again. They will begin to trust you and your business. It is called “brand loyalty”. People will trust and be loyal to you and continue to come to you for the latest fitness advice.

Becoming the Expert

There are many ways you can choose to get your content out there. You need to think about all ways potential clients in your location will get ahold of your content. Some great ways to show you’re the fitness expert in your area are:

  • Write articles for local newspapers about the latest fitness trends
  • Start a blog about the fitness industry
  • Utilize Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels to get as much content out as possible
  • Write only about relevant things and hot topics audiences will want to hear about

It is a “content-driven” world out there and that fact is definitely dripping into the fitness industry. If you are not producing original, valuable content you will be left behind in the dust of your competitors who are. Start taking the initiative and creating that content and getting it out there!
