In June 2004, The National Federation of Professional Trainers (NFPT) conducted a scientific research study to define the role of the Certified Personal Trainer (NFPT-CPT). The mechanism for this study was a Job Analysis survey. The results of the study provided the basis for making a valid claim of appropriate test score inferences. In support of these efforts, NFPT contracted with Schroeder Measurement Technologies, Inc. (SMT) to develop and conduct the survey describing the important tasks and knowledge elements required for competent entry-level CPT practice. Please refer to the NFPT Candidate/Affiliate Handbook for detailed information regarding examination development and all related processes.

Exam Outline
This outline provides the 9 primary exam categories in addition to detailed subject matter for each; it is an overview of the examination and recommended reading for a better understanding of exam expectations. This outline is found in the NFPT Study Guide (provided to you in either electronic copy or hardbound upon enrollment) and is a suggested "checklist" for subject matter comprehension.
