Becoming a Fitness Expert Locally

Last week we looked at some practical tips on how to become an expert in the online world as a personal trainer. We talk a lot on the NFPT Blog about “becoming an expert” in your area and in fitness. It is something that is much easier said than done. There are two big areas in which you need to try to become the expert; your physical location and online. This week we’ll look at becoming the expert in your physical area.

Know your stuff!

This also made our “becoming an expert online” post. It is important enough that it also made this list! If you are trying to be an expert in the fitness industry, you better know your stuff! People will have no problem pointing out when you are wrong about something to do with exercise science or the fitness industry. Study up and know all different angles to each topic you discuss.

Be Featured in Local Media

When you see someone on TV, in a newspaper or hear them on the radio frequently that shows you that they are seen as an expert on the subject they are talking on. Try sending some written content to your local newspaper with the idea of having a “fitness column” in the paper that you would write for them. Contact your local TV news stations and tell them about some of the great things your gym is doing for the community to try to get a story on yourself and your gym. When people see you are writing for the paper or giving interviews to news anchors on fitness and personal training related things, you will soon be seen as a fitness expert in the area.

Network with other local Influencers

Don’t just network with them on a personal note. Get to know them and their business as well. Start by actually creating a friendship with this person and the business side of things will fall into place later. Networking takes time and it is not always an easy task. But, trust me, connecting with these influencers will be well worth the work.

Speak at Events

Not everyone will have this opportunity, but if you live in a large enough city where they may hold some sort of fitness events, try your hardest to be a part of these. This is something that will hopefully fall into your lap if you start accomplishing the latter ideas first (strong online presence, featured on local media, networked with influencers, etc). Being involved in these events is a great way to be seen as an expert in the fitness realm. Usually the people who speak at these events are seen as those who are most invested in the industry and have a good grasp on it.

What are some more ways you can get your name out there as a fitness expert in your area?
