Why Personal Trainers Need to be Technology Savvy

Think through your day and how much technology, social media and just the Internet in general is a part of your day. We spend so much time checking and sending emails and “Liking” our “Friends'” pictures and Googleing to find “who that one actor is who was in that one movie”. It was most likely Kevin Bacon. That guy is connected to everything, but I digress.

Connectivity surrounds us at every corner. It is inescapable. With the rise of smartphones and the Internet, the world seems like a much smaller place than it did 20 years ago. But not only that, we are able to interact with so many different people and things more frequently than we ever could have before. And since it’s available, you can bet your bottom dollar that we are using it! Each minute there are roughly 2.4 billion users transferring data on the Internet. 2.4 BILLION people each MINUTE! That’s insane! This is a great infographic showing exactly what happens on the Internet in a mere 60 seconds.

This is just proof that you, as a fitness professional, need to have some sort of presence on social media and the Internet. As a personal trainer you need to be technology savvy. Of course, I’m not saying that you’ll get an opportunity to interact with all those 2.4 billion users at any given minute. But look at how much people are interacting with one another! Look at how much information is shared. If you can even get a fraction of that interaction, it would be worthwhile. Check back on some of our previous posts on Facebook, Twitter and how to use social media to your advantage as a trainer. Get out there and start interacting!
